This self-portrait was painted by the artist in 1628. Recently, he returned from Amsterdam, where he studied with the established painter Peter Lastman, the artist equips his own workshop and decides on the recruitment of students. Young Rembrandt Harmenszoon Van Rijn is full of hopes and expectations.

All self-portraits of Rembrandt are very sincere and believable. At the age of twenty-two, the young man looks somewhat insecure and alarmed. Curly hair, a lively blush on the face, an interested look, indicate a romantic nature. The shadow falling on the face gives the portrait a mystery and integrity.

Looking at himself in the mirror, the artist transfers to the canvas not only his external appearance, but also the internal state of consciousness, hidden even from himself. A sense of anxiety, uncertainty and fear of the future are inherent in most creative young people. Maybe he is not sure of his own talent? The result of his labors of knowledge of artistic mastery will show time.

Rembrandt is looking for his original and recognizable writing style. The original imposition of light and shadow is used throughout the artist’s creative life, which emphasizes and highlights the mood of his characters. The artist is not interested in banal plots in painting. He longs for something deep and meaningful. Man, as the crown of the creator, occupies a central place in his paintings.

He was particularly good at portraits. It is thanks to the ability to convey a sensual and realistic image of a person on the canvas that Rembrandt will bring public recognition and material well-being.

Portraiture occupies a significant part in the artistic heritage of Rembrandt. Self-portraits are especially valuable, as they allow us to understand the formation of the gifted painter Rembrandt Harmenszoon Van Rijn.
